Curriculum

Training must be continuous, systematic, and progressive.

Kihon Waza

Kihon waza is the foundation of everything we do, both in training and in life. In every technique there are fundamentals that must be learned and mastered. From the smallest detail, we diligently strive to master these fundamentals.

Cardio

Cardio training is a vital part of our training philosophy and is present in every training session. We embrace traditional and modern techniques and strive toward strong endurance and lasting stamina.

Partner drills

As students advance in Goju-Ryu and Ryukyu Kobudo, partner training drills become a vital part of training. Special care is given to ensure students learn proper safety when working with their partners, and the progression from intermediate to advanced skill levels is a slow one.

Kata

Kata is the heart of traditional karate and kobudo. Through the continual study of kata, we unlock the meaning of our art and develop focus, power, proper posture, and balance. Watch our kata.

Self defense

Through a progressive process, students learn the skills associated with self defense and develop the self-confidence and control needed to avoid physical altercations outside the proper setting of the dojo.

Hojo Undo

Goju-Ryu has a rich tradition of hojo undo, or supplementary exercises: the conditioning training specifically used in Okinawan karate. It develops ambidextrous strength, stamina, coordination, speed, and posture using simple traditional tools made from wood and stone. More on Hojo Undo

Kumite

Through the practice of kumite, students learn the value of sportsmanship and become comfortable applying techniques in a non-scripted environment.
